Global Hangover Recovery Index

30 countries ranked by how well they equip citizens to survive the morning after — measuring pharmacies, paid leave, tap water, and the depth of cure traditions.

0.0
#1: Japan — 81.8 points
Biggest Surprise

Romania drinks 17.1L of alcohol per capita — and ranks 25th for recovery.

The countries that drink the most are NOT the best at recovering. Romania leads all 30 nations in alcohol consumption but has thin pharmacy coverage, restricted OTC access, and almost no commercial hangover recovery infrastructure. Meanwhile Japan, which drinks less than half as much, tops the index with the world's highest pharmacist density and vending machines stocked with liver-support drinks.

Counter-Intuitive Findings
#5

South Korea beats Ireland, Germany, and Australia — with a billion-dollar hangover industry

South Korea has a perfect 100 Cultural Cure score — the only country to max this dimension. Its haejangguk restaurants operate 24/7 specifically for hangover recovery. Convenience store chains stock proprietary hangover recovery drink lines backed by real R&D. The market is worth over $100 million USD annually. This is not tradition. This is industry.

#25

Romania: world's heaviest drinker in this study, 25th-place finisher

At 17.1 litres of pure alcohol per capita per year, Romania outdrinks every other country here by a significant margin. Its Hangover Recovery Score is 50.2. It has ciorbă de burtă — a genuinely effective tripe-soup remedy — but no commercial infrastructure to make it available at scale. High intake, minimal readiness.

#18

The USA has great pharmacies and clean water — and ranks 18th anyway

America's Scheduling Slack score of 24.6 is second-lowest in the entire index. Zero statutory paid vacation. No mandatory sick leave. The biological infrastructure for recovery (clean water: 96.2, pharmacy OTC access: 69.8) is world-class. The policy permission to actually use it is not.

#15

Ireland: the pub-culture country is aggressively mediocre

Ireland finishes 15th with a score of 70.7 — behind Australia, Canada, and Netherlands. Its healthcare access score of 51.8 is the weakest of any country in the top half. The full Irish breakfast is real. The healthcare system capacity to support a bad morning is not keeping pace.
